Humor, laughter, and mental health
Did you know that laughing can improve memory, creativity, problem-solving, learning, and increase general brain function?
Laughter is a strong human emotion that brings people together, enhances our mood, and positively affects our mental health and brain function. Laughter has been found to be an effective stress reliever, decreasing the levels of stress hormones, such as adrenaline, and cortisol that can help reduce the symptoms of mental health disorders.
When we laugh, our brain releases endorphins that help relieve pain, and reduce stress and anxiety levels. Humor may also contribute to increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), as does stress and exercise. By supporting the growth and development of neurons and synapses, BDNF may help to protect against cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Humor and listening and laughing at jokes and trying to understand the punchline require mental processing, which can help improve cognitive function and memory.
Attending stand-up comedy shows can be a fun and easy way to improve brain health and overall well-being by reducing stress, helping relaxation and better sleep quality, improving memory recall and cognitive function, and promoting social support and community.
