A close look at neurological injuries after natural disasters
Helping those with traumatic brain injuries is a community effort and a long road to recovery - both at home in Seattle as well as in natural disasters such as in Turkey.
Earthquakes are devastating natural disasters that cause significant damage to infrastructure, homes, and lives. Along with the physical destruction, earthquakes cause lasting traumatic brain injuries and spinal and neural traumas. The shaking and displacement of the ground cause people to fall, hit their heads, and suffer from concussions or more severe brain injuries. These types of injuries can have severe and long-lasting consequences for those affected, including physical and cognitive disabilities, chronic pain, and psychological distress.
Recovery from earthquake-related traumatic brain injuries and spinal and peripheral nerve injuries can be challenging, both physically and mentally. Access to medical care, rehabilitation, and support services may be limited in the aftermath of an earthquake. This can lead to delays in treatment and a lack of resources for individuals to recover fully from their injuries. Additionally, the psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event like an earthquake can make it difficult for individuals to cope with the physical and emotional challenges of recovery.
Rehabilitation and therapy methods are designed to help patients regain function, independence, and quality of life. A team approach involving physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other healthcare providers is often necessary to provide comprehensive care.
