Art is Therapy

Author: Albina U.

Art therapy is described to be(but not limited to) coloring, drawing, or painting to improve one’s health. Through the help of an art therapist, research has shown that it has several benefits, such as assisting people in coping with their health conditions and increasing self-esteem. The focus is not on the final product but rather, what one can learn about themselves through their creations. Throughout history, many have turned to art to practice self exploration and connect with others. Even by itself, creating art can be a tool for healing for people of all ages.

Growing up, I’ve always loved art, whether it is painting during my free time or going to art galleries to admire work made by others. From a young age, I learned that you can discover yourself through your artwork. As a kid, I drew ocean waves and mountains to clear my head when I was feeling extremely stressed. When I was content, I painted people that I cherished and sceneries that I wanted to remember. I found that when I was happy, I would paint using bright, vibrant colors. Through art, I was able to understand more about my emotions while relieving my stress levels. I believe that taking time to engage in practices that allow your self expression and creativity to shine can be very beneficial to your mental health. Before last year, I was not aware of the practice of art therapy. Now, I can confidently see how important of a tool art can be in helping people cope with what the world has thrown at them.
